 As one of America’s most recognizable thoroughfares, 42nd Street gave birth to Broadway’s theatre district. It later devolved into a seedy street of drug dealers, pimps and slumlords. Along the way, the notorious route was made into successful Warner Bros. movie musical evolving decades later into David Merrick’s Broadway stage version in 1980. The legendary strip then had a legendary renaissance and has become an economic and tourist destination for New York City.
