Using pigments, graphite, digital collage and spray paint,
Aubry creates illusions that blend the line between real and imagined
A vibrant exhibition of mixed-media works will soon be on display at the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County’s headquarters in downtown Lake Worth Beach.
An exhibition of work by West Palm Beach-based professional artist Molly Aubry will take place January 27 through March 11, 2023, in the Cultural Council’s Solo Gallery. Free and open to the public, exhibition hours are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
In her first solo exhibition — titled Dark Luminosity — Aubry combines painterly and digital processes to explore entangled perceptual worlds. She uses pigments, graphite, digital collage, and spray paint to create kaleidoscopic illusions that blend the line between what’s real and imagined. Referencing light, water, otherworldly planets, and living cells, these mixed-media works invite the viewer to see themselves as part of an interconnected universe and ponder their space within.
“Molly’s work feels like an exploration of cellular pathways, veins, or microbes. It’s visually appealing, and seems vital and alive,” said Jessica Ransom, the Cultural Council’s director of artist services and curator of the exhibition.
Selected through a highly competitive application process, Aubry is one of six Palm Beach County professional artists whose work was chosen by a committee for a coveted Solo Gallery exhibition. With work seen in exhibitions across the world since 2007 (including three at the Council), she recently received critical acclaim for Bioluminescent Portals, an installation commissioned by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs Art in Public Places Program for the Related Group’s building Gallery on the River in Miami. Embedded within the building’s architecture, the work explores light, depth, and the inherent tension between organic and built environments.
“My work is inspired by my observations of the natural world,” Aubry said. “My background in both painting and graphic design gives me the freedom to combine seemingly contradictory processes, as I allow the work to evolve beyond my initial intention.”
Dark Luminosity will include works of various mediums and sizes, including work from her iconic ‘Tessellations’ series, featuring graphite paper folded into geometric shapes and positioned as if they are crawling up a wall. The exhibition will also feature sweeping large-scale 8 ft. by 3 ft. works that allude to doorways, and hand-painted works on paper juxtaposed against vast digitally patterned surfaces.
“This new body of work changes as it is viewed from different angles,” Aubry said. “Through the use of iridescent pigments, contrasting textures, and shifts in scale, my intention is for the work to evoke a sense of wonder.”
Aubry’s work will also soon be on display throughout West Palm Beach’s Northwood Village. Through a new commission from ArtLife WPB, Aubry’s geometric metal sculptures with colorful glass inserts will be installed and await discovery in unexpected locations. Solar-powered LEDs will glow from underneath the sculptures at night, casting beautiful, colorful shadows.
Molly Aubry: Dark Luminosity will run from January 27 through March 11 at the Council’s headquarters in Lake Worth Beach. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
