Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 28 in 2018). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. Service Members who died while on active duty. First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War, it was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.
Boca Raton: At 9 a.m., a service honoring and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice begins at the Boca Raton Cemetary. Among the participants will be several veterans’ groups, plus City officials. The Fort Lauderdale Highlanders will provide music, and there will be military style drills by Boca Raton Community High School NJROTC, and participation by the Boca Raton Police and Fire Honor Guard. Central Palm Beach County: At 10 a.m., the U. S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the National Cemetary Association will present a Memorial Day Service at the South Florida National Cemetary, 6501 S. State Road 7 (U.S. 441), in unincorporated Lake Worth, 33449. The reach this national cemetary, head west from I-95 on Lantana Rd. or from the Turnpike on Lake Worth Rd. Continue west to State Rd. 7.
