Ernest Thompson’s “On Golden Pond” (1979) illumines life’s inevitable passages and perceived cruelties as aging Norman and Ethel Thayer return to their New England cottage for another routine summer on Golden Pond. However, Norman’s memory loss this time alarms him and he begins to face his mortality; meanwhile, Ethel focuses on life’s lighter side. The fallout from these juxtaposed attitudes ripples through their family and beyond in this tender story of expectations, frustration and humor.
