Film Night: The Palm Beach Story & Live Painting

We’re celebrating the 80th anniversary of 601 Lake Avenue here in Downtown Lake Worth Beach! As a nod to its original iteration as the Lake Theatre (1940–1974), we’ll be showing Preston Sturges’ 1942 classic romantic comedy film, The Palm Beach Story, featuring Joel McCrea and Claudette Colbert.

We’ll also be featuring an exciting live painting demonstration by Jennifer Fisher, the talented artist behind the famous “Pretty in Pink” painting of our building.

About the film from the Criterion Collection: ā€œThis wild tale of wacky wedlock from Preston Sturges takes off like a rocket and never lets up. Joel McCrea and Claudette Colbert play Tom and Gerry, a married New York couple on the skids, financially and romantically. With Tom hot on her trail, Gerry takes off for Florida on a mission to solve the pair’s money troubles, which she accomplishes in a highly unorthodox manner. A mix of the witty and the utterly absurd, ā€œThe Palm Beach Storyā€ is a high watermark of Sturges’ brand of physical comedy and verbal repartee, featuring sparkling performances from its leads as well as hilarious supporting turns from Rudy Vallee and Mary Astor as a brother and a sister ensnared in Tom and Gerry’s high jinks.
