Speaker: Dr. Lin Tian, Scientific Director at the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience
Musical Guest: Musicians from Palm Beach Symphony, Dr. Emilio Rutllant, flute and Marti Moreland, harp
Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience presents Science Meets Music, a free community speaker series that unites stories about cutting-edge brain research with captivating musical performances. Held at the Benjamin Upper School in Palm Beach Gardens, Science Meets Music is a chance for members of the community to learn and celebrate the exciting science taking place right in our own backyard.
About the lecture: Serious mental illness is a pressing public health issue, impacting over 13 million Americans. To understand the imbalances in the brain that lead to conditions like anxiety and depression, Dr. Lin Tian and her team needed a way to reveal changes in neurotransmitters. They developed molecular tools to finely orchestrate and precisely track neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. Now, the Tian Lab explores non-hallucinogenic psychedelics capable of rebalancing neurotransmitter systems without hallucinations. In this lecture, Dr. Tian shares how she uses new tools to understand basic aspects of the brain, creating a future where personalized treatments reduce the impact of mental illness.
