Join us in celebrating Japanese culture and the ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN exhibit during this activities-packed Family Day featuring artists, authors, and origami superstars, Michael LaFosse and Richard Alexander who collaborated on the exhibit. Michael and Richard will be on hand all day; signing some of their many origami books, teaching how to fold original butterfly designs, and helping you perfect your paper airplane folding techniques! Plus Taiko drummers, snack vendors, and bubbles!

9:00 am – 10:30 am | Book Signing & Butterfly Folding in the Pavilion behind the Gift Shop

Michael and Richard will sign books and demonstrate how to fold their original butterfly design. Guests are encouraged to try their hand at folding their own butterflies by following simple written instructions.

10:45 am – 11:45 am | Paper Airplane Folding & Flying on the Great Lawn

Richard and Michael will teach visitors how to fold one of their best-flying paper planes, and will allow those who would prefer to fold their favorite plane to show off. Folders will get to use a motorized plane launcher to try out their designs. Michael will teach participants how to make their own simple plane launcher with a rubber band.

12:00 pm – 12:30 pm | Taiko Drums by Ronin Taiko

Ronin Taiko is a Fort Lauderdale-based Japanese Drum Troupe that practices and performs the art of Taiko. Through powerful sounds, energetic movements, and the use of theatrics, Ronin Taiko has developed a unique passionate dedication to the traditions of Taiko drumming and performance.

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm | Michael LaFosse & Richard Alexander present “Hand Papermaking & Origami Art: From Botany to Bronze” in Exhibit Hall A
Michael and Richard will present an overview of Origamido Studio’s work in origami and papermaking through the years, including their recent collaboration of ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN at Mounts with Kevin and Jennifer Box. Michael coined the term “Origamido,” featuring the Japanese “do” suffix to reflect origami’s potential as a worthwhile lifelong pursuit (“study,” “journey,” “path,” or “way”). Michael and Richard are perhaps the first and only origami artists who make their own custom papers for each new piece. Come find out all the fascinating aspects of this art form, what inspires them for each project, what materials they chose, and why origami appeals to the artist in us all.

Registration is highly recommended for 1pm lecture with Michael La Fosse and Richard Alexander as seating is limited.
