Palm Beach County Artist: Liz Brown

Liz Brown - LizKat DesignsOne day about fifteen years ago, Palm Beach County artist Liz Brown said she simply could not find earrings to wear in her already-gauged ears. “That’s when I got serious about making jewelry,” said Brown, of West Palm Beach.

“I started making my own jewelry and LizKat Designs took off from there.”

To Brown, jewelry is a symbol people wear to display interests, or even their `mood of the day.’ “I love creating jewelry because it is personal and defining,” she said.

Brown realized early in life that she was an artist. “I have always been creative like many others in my family,” she said. “My interest in the arts began upon my first words. I sang, danced…loved drawing and painting.”

She made her first piece of jewelry at a summer camp when she was just 10-years-old. Fast forward to the year 2007 and she launched her own jewelry design company with an adult-sized dose of entrepreneurial spirit wrapped in humility.

Brown draws a large portion of inspiration from music, keeping it a big part of her daily life. “Music is my number one love and I don’t think I could exist without it,” she said.

Her expressed keen awareness of the beauty found in her natural environment is another constant that fosters her creativity. “Its complexities remind me how small we truly are, triggering extreme appreciation for the elements,” she said.

Another way she remains inspired to create art is by surrounding herself with talented friends. “I am fortunate to be surrounded by incredible artists who inspire me on a daily basis. You know who you are,” she said.

When she’s not creating jewelry, she enjoys spending time with her son, studying English Literature, singing and learning a new artisan skill: Metalsmith.

“I love what I do, said Brown, “and I appreciate that not enough people get to say that about their job.”
