Building Learning Communities through Arts & Culture (BLCTAC)
Year 1 (2009)

With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kenan Charitable Trust, the Palm Beach County Cultural Council created the program initiative, Building Learning Communities through Arts & Culture to expand and advance outcome-driven arts and cultural education programs for middle school children and their teachers in Palm Beach County focusing on Social Studies. The program objectives include:

A. Increase students’ level of appreciation, knowledge, understanding of social studies through arts integration;
B. Increase teachers’ comfort and knowledge with incorporating the arts into curriculum;
C. Build organizations’ capacity to deliver outcome-based arts and cultural education.

Participants:

• Center for Creative Education, Chancellor Charter School and teaching artists Jean Hart Howard and Mellie Justad.

• Center for Creative Education, Okeeheelee Middle School and teaching artists Graciela Bignaghi and Ronni Gerstel.

• Palm Beach Atlantic University Preparatory Program in Dance, Conniston Middle School and teaching artists, Jin young Lee and Gaynelle Gosselin.

• Young Singers of the Palm Beaches, Carver Middle School and teaching artist Erica Barnes.
